Training Issues: In Progress

Apologies for what seems like an abandonment of this site and training items. Last night I decided to check on the site and discovered that training materials were not working as I designed. The template system appears to have gone rogue, showing only the training thumbnail instead of the actual training material. I have remedied this and still have work to do in order to get things working as I would like for them to work. I am now back on the site full time and will get all of the bugs worked out.

WordPress 4.8.3 Released

From the release of 4.8.3:

"WordPress versions 4.8.2 and earlier are affected by an issue where $wpdb->prepare() can create unexpected and unsafe queries leading to potential SQL injection (SQLi). WordPress core is not directly vulnerable to this issue, but we’ve added hardening to prevent plugins and themes from accidentally causing a vulnerability."

Yikes, SQL injections are a bad thing. SQL injections can allow for nefarious SQL statements to be inserted into an entry field for execution. One example of this is to allow an attacker to dump your database contents. It is always advised that security releases are applied as soon as possible.

WordPress 4.7.1 Security and Maintenance Release

The first security and maintenance release for WordPress 4.7 was released today to fix 8 security issues affecting 4.7 and earlier versions. This means that if you are on one of the lower 4.x versions (such as 4.6.2), those should have an update release as well. Be sure to update your sites if they are not auto updated.

New Photos Added

10 new photos have been uploaded for Frugal Web Guy customers to access. This is part of my weekly commitment to provide new content on a regular basis. Nothing is worse, to me at least, then to have a stale web site with zero new content being added. These photos are available in the usual 1920x1080 pixel size and are all original photos taken by me on my ventures around United States. The areas currently covered by photos uploaded include the following states:

My Simple Sections Overhaul

The My Simple Sections plugin is using a dated, but still usable core, thanks to Custom Meta Boxes by HumanMade. While this still works, I am overhauling the plugin to remove this from the core and instead create tailored code for creating custom fields, for data entry. This should remove a bit of items from the core, and allow for more items to be added easier in the future. The total size of the plugin should also shrink a bit. More information about this change coming soon!

Restricting View Access in WordPress

Out of the box, all of your content is visible, unless your site (or parts of it) are being a paywall (think members only), set to private or protected from public viewing in some other manner. With these two amazing free plugins from the WordPress Plugin Repository, you can selectively show or hide some of the content on your site. This week, I am putting together training for these plugins.
